Julia's new look

Julia got her glasses today. In this picture, she is also showing off the "suitcase" she got with them. I think she likes the "suitcase" the best as she keeps taking her glasses off and putting them in it. Julia says she can still see without them, so she does not need to wear them. Her hair is done up for pictures she had done today. We went with the dress she wore in the wedding, so we recreated that look. Now we must be off to gymnastics. By the way, I found my cell phone, so we may be getting closer to a new dog. YAY!!

coming home - a week of highs and lows and 911

On Saturday July 18th, we started the day with the usual packing that takes place to get a family home from vacation. However, we had a tire that needed repair, so we left the kids with the rest of the family at the cabin and set out to find a tire place to no avail. So, we aired it up and hoped to stop along the journey home. We were in a hurry because we were scheduled in the church nursery that night.
We joined the family for breakfast at a pancake house which was very yummy and then began the drive toward home.
We never stopped to fix the tire which we later learned had a nail in it. We were blessed that the nail didn't come out and that the tire didn't blow. It was frustrating because we knew a trip to the tire store would result in being told we need new tires. Right now the budget is not there to replace the tires, so I set out Monday morning to get that tire fixed and to buy a month or two before facing the music about the tires. However, surprisingly enough, they never said I needed new tires. God is good.
After our arrival home on Saturday, Andy was exhausted. He took a nap while Zach, Savannah and I prepared to go work at church. The little ones were not under the constant supervision that they should have been, and I found them both sitting at the top of a ladder that had been left outside. YIKES! I quickly put them down in front of a movie so that Andy could continue to rest, and the rest of us could get going.
After church we arrived at home to find Andy cooking what little food we had in the house. I was near the stove on the phone checking the messages for the week when flames started shooting from an outlet behind the stove. The outlet was not in use, and my mind immediately raced back to my childhood when one night lights started coming on and going off randomly in our house. The breaker box was on fire, and the culprit was aluminum wiring. So, I dialed 911, thrust the phone into Andy's hands and ran to the basement to check the breaker box. It was fine, and the fire was out before Andy got off the phone. Zachary herded the kids outside, and we awaited the fire truck. They checked the outlet and made sure the sparks did not reach the insulation. We now have to call an electrician.
The funny side note of our adventure with the fire department is that while waiting for them to arrive, Savannah was hounding us about how to rip a CD so that she could load it onto her iPod -- not really a priority at that moment. Zachary fell asleep on the couch while the firemen were here. Wyatt was hungry and got mad that they pulled the stove out, and he later challenged one of the firemen to a light saber duel, only Wyatt was the only one armed with a light saber. I let Andy deal with the firemen while Julia and I searched for hidden pictures in Highlights magazine.
So, the week began with the difficult task of putting Bambi to sleep, and it ended with a call to 911. In between we had lots of highs, the wedding, the aquarium, Grotto Falls, and time spent with family. Yes, these events stressed us out, and we are now facing the expense of having an electrician come and fix this outlet and fix a breaker that will not trip on our electric box. Having Bambi put to sleep on a weekend in an emergency clinic was extra expensive. The very next day, I lost my cell phone and have not yet found it. I am convinced that it was dropped in a KFC parking lot in another state, so I now have to replace it. In addition, I have to get four kids ready for school. Signing them up for sports has dried out my checking account, and I've barely begun the shopping for school supplies. Uniforms are a whole other story. Savannah needs all new uniforms, and they are not cheap. I think the used uniforms I bought for Julia may be too small, so she may need new uniforms too, However, I do know this. God provides. I can't see how at this point, but I know that I know that I know that He will provide.
Even as we face all this stress, I look online everyday for a dog. We are dog people and while we have several other animals in this house, I think we will eventually get a dog. The timing is the question on this one. We are a busy family, and puppies need lots of attention and care. I don't want to act too soon and have someone who doesn't bond with the dog because they weren't yet ready to let go of Bambi. I did find a sweet little poodle -pom, but I haven't brought myself to inquire about the price of this sweet girl. She looks exactly like what I have in mind. I do know that our next dog has to be completely different from Bambi as I am not looking to replace her. I also have to wait until the funds are there as even the shelter dogs are very expensive these days. You may be thinking how could I look for a dog so soon after losing the dog that was part of our lives for 13 years? Remember that Bambi left us slowly. I think we did much of our grieving over the last several months as she pulled herself away from family life.

God has a way of putting your concerns in perspective. Even as I face these stresses, I remember that within the past couple of weeks, friends of ours lost their son who was a young adult, Zach lost a classmate, and one of my classmates died leaving behind a wife and young children. In the big scheme of things, my problems are small.
So that is where we are right now, caught between the highs and lows of life.

last and best day of vacation - July 17, 2009

Our last day of vacation turned out to be the best, so bear with me as I have a ton of pictures from that day. My kids will be grateful for all these pictures someday, right?

We started the day with an attempt to get a good family picture, or at least a good picture of the kids. Savannah and I are using an online service to build a mosaic picture of the entire family. We are going back to day one of my marriage to Andy and including our entire history of family pictures to create this picture that will eventually hang over our mantle or couch- if we ever get it finished. Andy and I rarely have our picture taken together, so it was worth a shot too.

This one is okay.

I think this one will work.

or maybe we will just do the kids - Joshua took these pictures by the water as we headed toward the park--He, Tessa, Zach and Mom were going to the Ripley's Museum, and Joshua was the only one who could climb down the rocks to take the pictures. He did a nice job, don't you think? I didn't even crop these.

I turned the camera on Joshua for a nice shot of him.

always the ham - I have numerous pictures of Julia from this day

We had a conversation on the trail about how funny Wyatt is and how he has a nice smile. He insists that people like him because of these two traits. I reminded him that as his mother I would like him even if he wasn't so funny and didn't have such a cute smile.

On the trail to Grotto Falls, Julia would stop and pose for a picture. I don't know what the puckered lips are all about. She is only five, but sometimes she blows me away with the things she comes up with. When we were headed back down the trail to leave, a mouse ran across the trail in front of Wyatt and Andy. I didn't see it, but Julia told me a story about how a mouse was in her preschool class one time, and they tried to catch it but couldn't. Miss Kris had to sweep it out the door. Then Julia proceeded to make up a song about a mouse being in the house and mama had to sweep it out. It was really cute, and she sang it most of the way back down the trail, and she even made two variations on it - one where she would sing "there's a mouse in the house, my baby says." She is a riot!

The trail was easily managed by Wyatt and Julia. We had no complaining, and the view for most of the trail was terrific. Wyatt does not normally like this kind of stuff, and he didn't complain. I think he was holding back in hopes that he could use it as a bribe to get something for being good. Not working Dude! You behave because it is the right thing to do.

Reaching the end of the trail, we got to enjoy this great waterfall.

One of the goals was to give Savannah an opportunity to paint a picture of her surroundings. So, we stayed at the end of the trail for quite some time. We were prepared with some art supplies for the little people too. Wyatt wanted to draw on the rocks so that they could have happy faces in their home.

Andy found a place to do some sketching. This created only one small problem . I was trying to keep two little people happy and away from Savannah's paint. Wyatt backed into her painting and got a nice streak across the back of his shorts (most of it came out in the wash). Julia suddenly had to use the bathroom. Uhh, not so easy for a girl to do outside, so that got a little messy.

Julia and Wyatt did great on this trail. They had fun and they liked it very much. On the way to the car, Julia told me that she wanted to be a "nature girl" when she grows up. She then changed her mind to say she wanted to be a coach. I wish I could remember her exact words, but somewhere in that conversation, she stated, "God has changed my life." I can't remember what she said next, but then she said, " I have learned that looking for something special is the greatest gig." Yes, she really said "greatest gig." Where she learned that, I have no idea.

Wyatt loved throwing stones in the water. That got to be a bit of a problem when people started going down to the water, and he continued to throw rocks - ahhh, boys!

love the perspective in this picture

Savannah did not finish her painting. She outlined her idea and took a picture of the scene she was painting. I have an 8X10 on order so that she can use it to finish her work. I am anxious to see the final product.

Having to cross streams on a trail is just cool! I guess the current lingo would actually be "BEAST."

The only down side to our time on the trail is that Zach was not there. When we went to the aquarium, we were able to get a deal on tickets to two other attractions. Zach wanted to see the haunted house and the Ripley's museum, but none of the rest of us did, so we got him the tickets because Joshua and Tessa also wanted to do those things. I know he would have loved this. Although his favorite part of vacation was the haunted house. I really think the whole group would have loved this, but Tiffany and her family are not at all into the outdoor stuff, so they wouldn't try it. My dad has a bad knee. Mom is still recovering from her back surgery. Tessa was still on crutches while awaiting her hip replacement, and Joshua and Tara actually made it to the falls during our failed attempt on Monday.
We returned to our van to find that just minutes into our looong drive out of the park, the gas light came on. YIKES! Then the cars in front of us came to complete stop. What was up with that? They had sighted a bear. Oh, I can't tell you how tempting it was to get out of the van and take a picture of that bear that was right there in plain sight. Fortunately, I am not that brave or stupid as the case may be. What a cool thing for God to let us see on our last day of vacation. The bear crossed the road right in front of the van in front of us, so we really got a good view of him. Unfortunately, this is the best picture we got.

When we returned to the cabin, we snapped some more pictures. This is Tessa.

Savannah and Tara

Julia was the ham, of course. I let her wear make-up. What can I say? We were on vacation.

Is she too much, or what?

Rock'n'Roll!

The plan here was to take a picture of the four of us with my mom and my girls (the only granddaughters). However, Joshua got sick, and Mom was taking care of him, so we just got the four of us. I can't tell you how many takes this took and how goofy some of those pictures were.

We ended the night with dinner out. There we made a few mistakes that kind of blew the budget a little bit. You can't keep leftovers on your last night. Tara and I both ordered the fried green tomato BLT. What were we thinking? That meal was huge! We should have just split one. Savannah ordered the adult helping of chicken tenders - again, too big! The child size would have been perfect. It was the biggest kid's meal I have ever seen.
After dinner we shopped some more, and Wyatt got the long awaited wallet. He then proceeded to point out that it has a place for a credit card, so he needs one of those. I plan to get him a $5.00 gift card to Target and let that be his credit card. He also said that he needs a license because it has a place for one of those too. Wyatt talked his grandpa into getting him a cap gun, so he really cleaned up on this trip.
Julia was happy to get a dog purse. I was happy to get back to the cabin and into bed. It was a very full and fulfilling day.

vacation - lodging

Before I finish blogging about vacation, I must take a moment to blog about our accommodations. Finding a place suitable to house 15 people is no easy task, but this cabin certainly delivered.

I have never been one to take pictures of bathrooms, but this one has two stories behind it. 1) Since we moved into our current home two years ago, I have stated repeatedly that I plan to move again when my children move me out to an old age home (lol). However, when I saw this bathroom, I thought maybe I could move for a bathroom like this. Now, you might be thinking that I was sold on the humongous bathtub, but that isn't it. No, what you can't see is the linen closet right there in the bathroom - now that is something this girl could appreciate. 2) When I went to give Wyatt a bath, he called it the egg tub because it was shaped like an egg - CUTE!
We had a landing with air hockey, and I didn't play it once.

In addition, we also had a pool table and a Foosball table. I didn't play those games either. Nor did I ever get in the hot tub on the lower deck.

Often when we travel together we split into different accommodations, but it can be so much fun when we all stay together. The kids are especially grateful when it works this way.

Vacation -Go carts and screaming swing

July 16, 2009

Today we started by racing out the door to go ride go-carts. They run a 2 rides for the price of 1 special before noon. Once again, this was a first for me. We chose an elevated track, and I had a car with plenty of horse-power. I screamed going down the hills and let out a couple of "YEE-HAWS!" After all, I was in Hill-Billy Vegas. Savannah loved the ride but chose Dad to drive her on the second run. I think I may have embarrassed her just a bit. It was plenty of fun, and I would do it again. According to Tiffany, it is also cheaper than the go-cart track in her town.

I could only get a picture of Andy and Julia on the actual cars and didn't see the observation deck until they were finished. They missed the cut-off when we rode, so they went in the group behind us.
so this is the go-carting group --Wyatt rode with Tiffany, and she cracked up over his statements that he was a good driver which were often followed by raising both his arms in the air like he was on a roller-coaster--I was only a little surprised that he liked it as he does not like roller coasters.
After the go-carts, Zach, Logan and Josh took a ride on the Screaming Swing. You would not catch me on that thing. They were video taped, and it was hilarious. They were laughing, and at one point, Zach stated, "I think I can see my house."

This is the view of the mountains from the strip.

After the thrill ride, we did a little shopping, and Wyatt is now the proud owner of a Western guns and holsters set. We hope this will appease him until we find the wallet. He is thrilled! He and Julia have fallen in love with Toy Story, and Wyatt wants a Woody doll, so this is a good start in that direction. "Reach for the sky."

Zach's shirt

vacation - July 15, 2009

We visited an aquarium today. WOW! I have never been to an aquarium before and enjoyed it immensely. There were pretty things to see along with the icky, scary, fascinating, and strange.

The kids are ready to go. Find the flounder.
it isn't the waterfall we sought yesterday, but hey, we've seen a waterfall

Julia took this picture of this pretty little fish. She actually got some great pictures today!

hammerhead fish

scary!

fascinating!

Barracuda -always makes me think of that song by Heart

pretty

icky

petting a crab

the girls

YIKES!

Savannah's favorite part was petting a sting ray.

What can I say? She commands me to take her picture.

After the aquarium, we went shopping. The mission - find a wallet for Wyatt and get Zach an air-brushed t-shirt with "Bone-crusher" (his wrestling nickname) on it. We wiped Julia right out. Wyatt would not stop talking about the wallet. Oh My! Every time we took a break from shopping, Wyatt would say, "do you remember the wallet?" He just about drove us crazy with it.

We saw some musicians on the street.

....and some cloggers too

Mission accomplished -Zach got his shirt (see most recent post as the picture was accidentally deleted). Savannah chose a bear.
