This is what she does on a lazy weekend.

High Risk Surgery

Would you join us in praying for my dad?  After a stress test and angioplasty, the doctors have discovered that he needs to have a cardiac balloon and two stents placed.  He will have surgery within the next two weeks to address these issues.  For him, this is a high risk surgery.

Frugal DIY?

I am experimenting this weekend.  For a few months now, wool dryer balls have been in my Amazon cart, but I just could not bring myself to spend $16 for them.  Looking for a cheaper alternative, I found this:
http://www.diynatural.com/how-to-make-wool-dryer-balls/

I would like to claim that I clean and cook and all that stuff all natural, but the reality is that my interest in the dryer balls was mostly monetary.  I love the smell of freshly cleaned laundry and love dryer sheets mostly for that reason.  However, I find them to be pricey, so I started looking for an alternative that would allow me to save money but still scent my laundry with something enjoyable.  Because essential oils can be used on these dryer balls, they won over the plastic options offered in stores.  Even better, they will supposedly last for years.  I have my concerns because I suspect that they won't remain in the dryer where they belong (another reason I never took the plunge on the plastic ball) because I know my family just grabs the clothes and goes. In fact, Zach just emptied the dryer of his laundry as he is heading back to school today after his spring break.  I ran to the basement to see if my newly made dryer balls went with him, and strangely enough, I found them on the floor.  Who knows how that happened?

I picked up a skein of yarn and put together two balls, one the size of a tennis ball, one smaller.  I wasn't really sure how much yarn I would need. They are tumbling in my dryer right now, and I will soon see if they felted. I will then try them on the load of darks currently agitating in the washer, and I will let you know how they worked.  Obviously, I don't yet have the six balls recommended by the article, but I will work on that with Michael's, JoAnn's, and Hobby Lobby coupons over the next few weeks.  My towels do not dry in one cycle, so I am anxious to have enough to try cutting the drying time.

The balls are in the dryer right now by themselves, and I can hear them drumming all over the house. If that is how they sound when tumbling with clothes, it might just be a deal breaker.

I do plan to try the essential oils, and I do plan to try the safety pin trick mentioned in the comments.

My next DIY will hopefully be deodorant/anti-perspirent.  I am very interested in the natural benefits of this product.  My research does not lead me to believe that homemade deodorant will be economical - at least not to get started.

Update: After several days of using these wool balls, I am satisfied.  I did add the safety pins to the balls and have had only one minor issue with static cling on an item that would be high static anyway.

They do the job, and while I do still need to make a few more, my towels did dry completely in one cycle this week. I have yet to add a scent to them because I am having a hard time finding the essential oils, but I am not really missing my dryer sheets.

She built a machine!

Julia came to us about two weeks ago and revealed that she built a machine.  She spends hours in her room watching how to videos, making squishies and making wallets out of duck tape.  We are pretty impressed with her latest accomplishment. Her machine dispenses squishies.

If you click on the picture, you can probably see the price for playing the game.

Pushing a duck tape covered card into a slot on the machine pushes the squishy into the shoot.

You can collect the squishy from the door.

Opening up the back of the machine reveals the shoot where squishies travel to the door.

A homemade squishy complete with packaging.

We were snowed in again on Thursday and Friday.  After Wyatt spent 20 minutes vacuuming the living room and I saw no improvement, I surrendered.  My vacuum cleaner would not be returning to the shop for the upteenth repair.  Instead, it would be retiring.  I purchased a Shark Navigator which required some assembly.  Julia was quite excited about helping with the assembly.  She told me she likes to build things....hmm, do we have a future engineer on our hands? A home renovator? Contractor?  We shall see.
