Vacation Wrap Up

On our last day of vacation, we risked burns to play in the sun.  We did some early morning shopping because Wyatt and Julia had been earning money from their aunts all week, and it was burning holes in their pockets.  They settled on a conch shell and a boogie board.

We then hit the pool and the waves.  Wyatt stayed close to Cartoon Network for the day, but we had some rowdy waves that day, and they were fun.

We ended the day with pictures on the beach and another game of Quelf.  This time the game had me laughing so hard that I was crying, but I had to give up my spot because I am not a night owl and needed to get some sleep.

I started the day with another glimpse of the sunrise.
I gave my mom a hard time about how much she played her DS.

I love the perspective of this shot taken by Savannah.

walking off the beach for the last time

Some of the memories made on this trip include a trip to a trailer park.  Tessa and I were looking for a park to have lunch on our way to Florida and directed the GPS to take us to a park.  We were surprised to land in a trailer park.

I did not want to leave.  This was the first vacation ever where I was more than sad for it to end, I truly did not want to return home.

I should do the count rundown for posterity.

  • Mom and Dad (2)

  • our crew (6 +2=8)

  • Tony and Tiffany and their boys (4+8=12)

  • Tara (1+12=13)

  • Jonathan and Danielle (2+13 =15)

  • Tessa (1+15=16)

  • Joshua (1+16=17)
Yes, I can add, I think.
When I was growing up, the girls outnumbered the boys, but the boys now outnumber us.  We will even things up with Regan's arrival in September!

Ah! Bliss Restored

We started the day with a visit from AAA. Yes, I will renew my membership next month.  A good-ole-country boy jumped the van, gave his opinion that we had a bad battery and sent us on our way. So, we took a one-hour drive, on vacation, to an Auto Zone to replace the battery.  While this was not on the agenda, and I was less than thrilled, I have to say the Jersey girl and Air Force wife who changed out our battery was a breath of fresh air, friendly and so nice.  I could just love sitting down for lunch with this sweet girl.

In perfect Tamara style, I slept for most of the ride home.  I just know those of you who are family are falling over in shock over this revelation (yes, I agree with Andy that a sarcasm font is a great idea).

I returned and updated Facebook, soaked in the pool for a while and then played in rather rowdy waves in the Gulf.  Oh my, what fun!  The kids enjoyed the waves and dug a big hole, and I decided today that I really could live in Florida (on beachfront property, of course).  I would certainly settle for another week, but another day will have to do.  I just love, love, love vacation, and my heart breaks every year over the very real fact that this could be the last.

Just what do I love?
17 people, one house, private pool
no cell phone (folks, we are roaming here, all phones are off)
such amazing pictures
time with God on the deck
family, family, family
my oh so generous parents who feed us well
the beach
did I mention the beach?
yes the beach
sunrise
sunset
naps whenever
more adults than kids, so I really get a break
funny kid expressions
kids and their antics
no job here
the laundry Nazi (that is what we call my sister who constantly washes clothes, I have now taken to putting dirty laundry in the laundry room as I will never have access to the washer and dryer, and my clothes just show up clean)
humor
laughs
getting to forget the cares of this world (other than when my dad constantly talks politics)
remembering that God is an amazing creator
making incredible memories
reveling in just how close my family is--so blessed

and now you know why a second job is worth the cost because I am just trying to hang on to abundant life with a group of people I really love

What I love about this vacation...
Wyatt has volunteered to pray during family devotion time twice.  He has almost always refused in the past stating that he does not know how to pray.  I talked with him about how to pray on several occasions to no avail, so my joy is huge over this change.

Wyatt and Julia love bouncing in the waves, and watching them is so much fun.

I love the calm water when we all relax in the ocean and when God kicks it up a notch allowing us to bounce in the waves.

All 17 of us are here.  Jonathan and Danielle were on their honeymoon last year when we vacationed.

Julia just couldn't get enough when she played in the waves.

Check Zach out below...a few years back.  It goes so fast!

Wyatt spent much time watching Cartoon Network.  He lets us know that he is a deprived child because we did not have cable for long after he came home.

I cracked up over this.  Logan dug a hole, filled it with water, and then sat in it.  I called it his toilet.

Game time- This was the first time the group played Quelf, and it was hysterical.  Zach had to dance around like a ballerina.  Savannah had to hula hoop.  Danielle had to pretend she was playing drums like Ringo Starr.  This game is side-splitting funny.

Shaken Bliss

Bliss- I simply planned to title this post Bliss.  This was after spending some time in calm ocean water where I caught a glimpse of sea turtle and we see dolphins daily.  An afternoon thunderstorm threat brought the opportunity to barely beat my dad at pool and time to rest and hang out with the family.

Sitting poolside is a challenge as mosquitoes eat us alive.  We struggle to find relief, so I offered to take a trip into town for some Citronella candles.  However, the van would not start.  This is just another glitch  in my ongoing struggle to put my trust in God.  My mind races to the day I took the van to have the tires rotated just a week ago. "As a general rule, we check your vehicle, and it is good to go," the mechanic stated. He went on to say that we are due for some routine maintenance, but there is no need to hurry.  When the van wouldn't turn over, I got out and checked the doors to make sure none had been left ajar. I found them all solidly closed, and since they've been left open before without draining the battery, I couldn't make sense of it.  The clicking sound I heard when trying to start the van frightens me as I remember the last time we replaced an alternator on a van---very expensive.  We are out of state which usually means more expensive, and we are struggling financially anyway.  So, I try to hold on to the relaxing day we had.  I try to be grateful for the fact that I was going to run an errand and did not learn this about the van when we really needed or wanted to go somewhere.  I try not to be edgy or worried. I try to remember to be joyful in all circumstances and to replace worry with prayer. I try to trust that my God will take care of us, but I admit that this is a struggle.

Crab hunting in the afternoon yielded some huge crabs.  Unfortunately, the best picture I took was without a memory card, and my camera has no internal memory.

Wyatt wanted to take this home.  He has been fascinated by the crabs.  I asked him to settle for a picture instead.  I don't know why I didn't think of this before, but I am going to gather pictures of Wyatt's favorite things and people and put them in a collage frame in his room.  Because I blog all my pictures now, Wyatt and Julia do not have the luxury of leafing through albums, and kids really like to do that.  I think a collage will make for a nice alternative.

This is the living room of our vacation getaway.

These scary stairs lead to the bedroom where the kids slept.  We were not too thrilled to learn that Zach and Austin carried Wyatt and Julia down these steps one night.  Wyatt and Julia were asleep during this event.

Two sets of bunk beds, a half bath and a foo ton all fit in this little loft, and nine people shared this room.  Zachary and Austin moved to the hide-a-bed in the living room after a couple of nights.  This is the price you pay for a beach side house with a mattress for everyone, air conditioning, and indoor plumbing.

The view from the front of the house.

The view from the back of the house.

The view from our front window or deck.  It was from this window that we watched the dolphins jumping from the water.

Game time

baseball on the beach

My family all takes drinks into the ocean with them.  I could never do that as my drink would end up full of saltwater...nasty.

This is not a great picture, but it is a funny story.  We city folk have never seen one of these ice vending buildings.  Josh and I went to get ice, and he inserted the money and hit the cooler button before I could stop him.  We wanted bagged ice, so we had to start over.
